This Sunday is my only niece’s birthday. Unlike with her older brother, I don’t usually find myself at a loss as to what to get her/make for her. She’s a girlie girl with a smidge of tomboy sprinkled in. She’s fun to shop for. The only hard part is she is super petite…going to be four and has a lot of 2T clothing in her closet that still fits her just fine.
Anyway, I have been working on a quilt for her and other then tying it off, it is finished. I thought that I would give it to her for her birthday instead of waiting until Christmas like I had originally planned, but the more I thought about it, the more the idea didn’t appeal to me. Birthday’s are special, they are a celebration of you. The gifts you receive for your birthday should be special as well. And while a handmade quilt is special…I’m not so sure that a four year old would see it quite that way. So I decided that it would make a better Christmas gift since I am known as the aunt who gives practical gifts for Christmas anyway. (let everyone else overwhelm children with toys that capture their attention for fleeting moments. I’d rather give a gift that will still see use the following September.)
Okay, that meant I had to come up with a new idea quickly. And because I have decided that if I can help it, I am making gifts instead of buying them, it had to be something I could put together quickly. The answer…a tutu! But of course! What little girly girl couldn’t use a tutu?!?
I was able to find a great tutorial at Plumtickled. I think her model is just the cutest. Just look at that face. And it was super easy to make. I think the hardest part was cutting the tulle. I chose to do it in a very light purple, white and a light pink and well I couldn’t see the tulle on top of my cutting mat. That was a little annoying. Anyway…I got it all cut and knotted on an elastic band that I hope fits her ‘just right’. (I didn’t want to call her mom for her waist measurement because I like gifts to be a surprise for the parent’s too.) (Apparently I am more particular about gifts then I thought I was.) I tried to take pictures of it after it was finished, but it was just too dark in the house. I’ll probably try to take some more this afternoon when I get home, but if that doesn’t work, I’ll just wait patiently until Friday when she receives it.
My biggest dilemma now…how do you wrap a tutu?
